This project was designed to be an enjoyable ensuite space that would allow for complete barrier free access. Designed to be ADA compliant, the floating vanity was to allow for wheelchair access with fixtures that could be easily operated. The showering area allowed for complete wheelchair access with ample space for assisted showering. The entire ensuite floor is waterproof and heated (even the shower floor) with a Schluter "Ditra heat" system. The soaker tub surround, vanity and shower pillar is Corian Soild Surfacing giving these three dominate areas a monolithic presence.
The design objective for this project was to convert an existing living room into a senior suite with accessible washroom facilities for the client's elderly father. The goal was to avoid the wet room appearing as a "box" within an ornately trimmed, high ceiling farmhouse livingroom, but to become a functioning piece of art. Interior windows allow for natural daylighting into the wet room during the day, with the addition of warm ambient lighting glowing into the bedroom for the evening. The interior window detail was also continued above the large closet. The entire wet room is wheelchair accessible and waterproofed allowing for ease of transfers and assisted showering. The overall design of the entire room transforms back into a beautiful living space as desired.
