The design objective in this renovation/ restoration was to increase the homes energy efficiency and to make great use of a small space. Although the homes interior and exterior had been completely removed, the home now stands more true to it's original form. By pealing away decades of finishes- the home's original hemlock framing, flooring and wall boards are admired once again. The exposed hemlock ceiling joists are accented by bare bulb fixtures and globe pendants. A large cabinet was designed and constructed in the kitchen to store the washer and dryer as well as to act as a broom closet.
In the living room, a small home office with matching concrete counters is outfitted with plenty of storage in the form of drawers and cupboards. A beautifully crafted daybed of cherry provide a relaxing alcove for reading or enjoying the beautiful view outside. Large drawers below discreetly store blankets, cushions and toys.
The second floor was restored with its beautifully oiled hemlock floors and simple 6" trim and updated to have lots of storage. One small bedroom off the master was transformed into a large walk in closet with sliding doors.
Concrete countertops, hand pressed Italian tile and re claimed wood shelf and sills and exposed original 1875 hemlock framing give this kitchen a modern/ rustic update.
The objective for this Georgian home was to renovate the existing master bedroom and en-suite, provide direct access to the rear yard from the kitchen and build a new garage with laundry/ mudroom facilities. The solution was to create an elegant covered entry into the garage and mudroom. The garage widens in the interior allowing for two vehicles to park beside eachother. There is also a large overhead door to the rear allowing ease of access to the backyard for storing the family boat. For the interior, a long wide hallway with large french doors at the end connect the existing kitchen to the back yard. The hallway also has a large concealed pantry space for kitchen storage and overflow. Directly across the hall from the master bedroom is the new bathroom which allows it to function as a ensuite as well as a comfortable main floor bathroom.
These clients approached us wanting to design and build a modest, energy efficient home that would be low maintenance. Situated on top of a hill with an incredible view of Georgian Bay, this home needed to have main level entertaining/ living, while providing adequate, comfortable guest space below with a walk out basement. The breakfast nook is a favorite place for everyone from watching the storms over the water to the variety of field birds that pass through.
This project was designed to be an enjoyable ensuite space that would allow for complete barrier free access. Designed to be ADA compliant, the floating vanity was to allow for wheelchair access with fixtures that could be easily operated. The showering area allowed for complete wheelchair access with ample space for assisted showering. The entire ensuite floor is waterproof and heated (even the shower floor) with a Schluter "Ditra heat" system. The soaker tub surround, vanity and shower pillar is Corian Soild Surfacing giving these three dominate areas a monolithic presence.
